A few things (like the best eBay photo size) are really worth knowing, so that you can make your photos optimal for eBay. And as everyone knows, the better your images are, the more money you’ll make.
Let’s already assume you’ve read our article on how to take the best possible photos for your eBay listing, and now you’re ready to upload. Let’s get started:
What is the recommended photo size for eBay?
Ebay advises that the minimum and maximum image dimensions are 500×500 pixels and 9000×9000 pixels (height and width), respectively. Your photos do not need to be square.
However, the recommended optimum – for best zoom-in functionality – is that your images are 1600 pixels on the longest side.
We’ll talk about how to do the resizing below.
What is the maximum file size for eBay images?
The size of any one image must not exceed 12MB. However, if you work to an image size that is 1600 pixels on the longest side, you shouldn’t come anywhere near that.
Reducing the file size as much as possible (whilst maintaining the quality) is a good idea. It helps with load times of your listing. If your photos load just a little quicker, users are less likely to have to wait around waiting. It all helps.
What image format is best for images on eBay?
eBay supports the following image formats:
- JPEG
- PNG
- TIFF
- BMP
- GIF
JPEG is the one that most people will use, and gives good quality results.
How to process images for the optimum size on eBay:
So now we know what we’re aiming for, how do we edit for that?
If you’ve taken the best possible photos you can, your file size is likely to be quite large. You can still upload these photos to eBay and let it process them, but my recommendation is to do the resizing yourself.
To resize batches of photos, just drag them from your file (in my case the memory card on my digital camera) into the following Web page: https://bulkresizephotos.com
Then, resize them so that they’re 1600 pixels on the longest length, like so.
Click ‘start resizing’ and hey presto, my 6 images become a lot smaller!
The photos will be downloaded as a zip file. Extract the images into a new folder and delete the original. You’ve now got a set of photos in a folder that can be uploaded to eBay.
If you want to be absolutely watertight, you might want to also make sure your images have been compressed as much as possible. You can do that by running the resized images through https://imagecompressor.com , which works much like the batch resizer above.
Do I need to edit photos for eBay?
It’s eBay, not Instagram. You don’t need to spend time choosing filters and editing your photos.
Actually, trying to change the appearance of your items by using filters and edits is an unwise move.
Remember, you’re trying to present things accurately to the potential buyers. If you’ve edited out defects or used filters that have changed the colour, your eventual buyer is not going to be happy.
And nobody wants the bad feedback that comes with that.
So although you’re trying to present the item as best as you possibly can, do it through taking good photos in the first place, not by changing its appearance through edits.
Summary
So, there it is. You now know everything to be able to optimise your photos for eBay.
- They are no more than 1600 pixels on the longest side.
- The file size is as small as possible (without losing quality).
